About this bottle
Old Potrero comes from Anchor Distilling in San Francisco — the same company behind Anchor Steam beer — and it's made from 100% malted rye, which is unusual even among rye whiskies, since most legally-defined rye only needs 51% rye in the mash and typically blends in corn or other grains. Anchor's founder Fritz Maytag built the brand specifically to recreate the style of rye whiskey believed to have been distilled in colonial America, before corn-heavy bourbon became the dominant American style. Expect intense rye spice and malt character, genuinely more aggressive and grain-forward than most modern ryes on the shelf, aged in small barrels for faster wood extraction.
How to drink Old Potrero Straight Rye
Sip it neat with a splash of water — 100% malted rye runs hot and spicy, and a little dilution helps the malt character show through. It also makes an intensely spicy Sazerac if you want maximum rye character in a cocktail.
