Ron Centenario Gran Legado 12 Year is a Costa Rican rum aged in the tropics, where heat and humidity push the exchange between spirit and barrel far faster than it moves in cooler climates, so twelve years here is not twelve years in Kentucky. The house style is soft and dessert-leaning rather than dry and austere. The nose is molasses, toasted coconut and vanilla; the palate is round and sweet, with butterscotch, banana, cocoa and a little oak spice; the finish is warm and medium-length. Drink it neat as an after-dinner pour, over one large cube, or stirred into a rum old fashioned.
