Ron Izalco 18 Year Cask Strength Private Reserve is an El Salvadoran rum bottled straight from the barrel at full strength. Eighteen years in a tropical warehouse means heavy evaporation and an aggressive exchange with the wood, so the rum arrives dark, concentrated and considerably more oak-driven than the younger releases in the range. The nose is treacle, dried fig, coffee and old leather; the palate is dense and warm, with dark chocolate, toasted oak, dried banana and clove; the finish is long, dry and tannic. Serve it neat in a small glass, with water on the side to open it up gradually.
