Barrel #23-0713 is an eight-year single barrel of Russell's Reserve Kentucky straight bourbon, selected by The Bourbon Enthusiast at Wild Turkey and bottled on its own rather than blended into a batch. Eight years is a sweet spot for this distillery: enough wood to give the whiskey structure, not so much that the grain disappears behind it. The nose is brown sugar, orange zest and char. The palate is caramel corn and red apple with cinnamon and the peppery edge Wild Turkey always seems to carry. The finish is medium, warm and lightly tannic. Pour it neat, or build a stiff old fashioned and use half the sugar you normally would.
