DESCRIPTION
RY3 Straight Rye is an 8-year straight rye whiskey from Phenomenal Spirits, a Virginia Beach blending house rather than a distillery. That's the model here: they source aged rye stock — American from Indiana, Canadian from Alberta — and marry it, and the "8 year" means the youngest whiskey in the blend has spent at least eight years in oak. Most of the RY3 lineup gets a splashy cask finish, but this one skips that and lets the rye stand on its own: dry, spicy, and grown-up, with rye-bread and baking spice up front, then caramel, orange peel, and vanilla from the wood. Eight years rounds off the sharp edges without sanding away the pepper. Pour it neat, or build it into a Manhattan or Sazerac where the rye needs to carry.
