Slow & Low Maple Old Fashioned is a bottled old fashioned from Hochstadter's made in the rock and rye style, which means the straight rye whiskey is sweetened and spiced in the bottle rather than in the glass, with maple standing in for the usual sugar. Rye is what keeps the whole thing from tipping over into dessert. The nose is maple, orange peel and baking spice; the palate is round and syrupy at first, then dries out into peppery grain and a little bitterness; the finish is warm and lingering. Chill the bottle, pour it over one large cube, and finish it with an orange twist.
