Springbank 12 Year Cask Strength is a Campbeltown single malt Scotch bottled at full barrel strength, released in batches whose exact proof shifts a little each time. It comes from Springbank, one of the last distilleries to floor-malt its own barley and bottle with no chill filtration and no added colour. Twelve years in a mix of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, usually around a 60/40 split, builds a rich, oily whisky: brine and soft wood smoke on the nose, then pepper, dark chocolate, dried fruit and caramel carrying the coastal salt Campbeltown is known for. It runs hot at cask strength, so add a few drops of water, let it open, and treat it as a fireside dram for a patient evening.
