Bruto Americano is a bitter American aperitif from St. George Spirits in Alameda, California, made as a domestic answer to the red Italian bitters rather than a copy of one. It is built on California-grown botanicals — bittering barks and roots alongside citrus peel — and the result runs drier and more herbal than most of the category. The nose is orange peel and pine, the palate moves bitter-sweet through grapefruit pith, woody bark and a dark cherry note, and the finish is long, dry and gently astringent. Serve it over ice with soda and an orange slice, or swap it into a Negroni.
