William Larue Weller is the wheated bourbon in the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, released once each autumn uncut and unfiltered, and this is the 2022 edition. Wheat stands in for rye as the secondary grain in the mash, trading pepper for a softer, bakery sweet weight that carries a high barrel proof better than most bourbons do. Dark cherry, honeyed pecan and vanilla lead the nose, the palate is thick with caramel, cocoa and stewed fruit, and the finish runs long on toasted oak and brown sugar. This one is genuinely allocated and does not sit on shelves. Pour it neat with a few drops of water and take your time.
