The Boss Hog is WhistlePig's annual flagship rye release out of Shoreham, Vermont, and this Samurai Scientist edition (Boss Hog VIII) was a cask-strength rye finished with Mizunara Japanese oak influence, a nod to master blender Pete Lynch's background. It's bottled uncut and unfiltered at high proof, so it drinks hot and concentrated rather than gentle. Expect baking spice, dried fruit and a distinct sandalwood-like Mizunara oak note on the nose, a rich, spicy palate with rye heat, and a long, warm, incense-tinged finish.
