Yamato Cask Strength Special Edition is a Japanese whisky bottled without the usual reduction, so it arrives carrying everything the barrel gave it. Yamato is known for its Japanese oak character and for packaging that borrows from samurai armour, and the cask-strength version leans further into wood than the standard bottling does. The nose opens on incense, sandalwood and dried apricot; the palate is thick and warming, with honey, orange peel, coconut and a resinous spice running through it; the finish is long, dry and faintly smoky. Take it neat in a small measure, then add water drop by drop until the fruit steps forward.
