Cosmopolitan
Modern version credited to Toby Cecchini, the Odeon, New York, 1988
The Cosmopolitan is citrus vodka, Cointreau, fresh lime and cranberry, shaken hard and served up with a flamed orange peel. Tart, lightly sweet and pale pink, it is cleaner and drier than its reputation. A spring night-out drink.

The Cosmopolitan's origins are disputed. Versions circulated in Provincetown, Miami and San Francisco in the 1980s, and Toby Cecchini says he created the modern recipe at the Odeon in New York in 1988 with Absolut Citron, Cointreau, fresh lime and cranberry. Dale DeGroff popularized it at the Rainbow Room and added the flamed orange peel.

Bottle math, generally
Batching dilution
When you batch, there's no ice melting in a shaker, so you add the water yourself: 18% for spirit-forward drinks, 25% for shaken ones.
