About this bottle

Carlos Camarena makes El Tesoro Extra Anejo Tequila at La Altena, his family's highland distillery, the slow way - brick-oven-roasted Blue Weber agave crushed under a stone tahona wheel. The extra anejo then spends four to five years in American oak ex-bourbon barrels, a bottling Camarena dedicates to his father Felipe's love of aged tequila. It pours vibrant gold: coffee, cinnamon, and buttered caramel on the nose, then dark chocolate, dried fruit, and roasted almonds on the palate, closing with pepper and oak. El Tesoro is additive-free, so the agave still speaks through all that barrel time. Sip it neat after dinner in the spot you would normally hand to a cognac.

How to drink El Tesoro Extra Añejo

Give it a few minutes of air in a snifter before tasting — four to five years in ex-bourbon oak means the dried fruit and roasted almond notes take a moment to surface. It's substantial enough to stand in for a digestif alongside dark chocolate or a strong espresso.

Questions about this bottle

How should I serve El Tesoro Extra Añejo?

Neat, in a snifter, the same way you'd serve a well-aged cognac — no ice needed.

What cocktails work well with El Tesoro Extra Añejo?

It's really a sipping tequila rather than a mixing one; save it for after dinner instead of a cocktail.

How is El Tesoro Extra Añejo made?

Carlos Camarena roasts the agave in brick ovens and crushes it under a stone tahona wheel at La Altena, then ages it four to five years in ex-bourbon American oak.

Is El Tesoro tequila additive-free?

Yes — El Tesoro doesn't use added glycerin, sugar, or coloring, so the agave character carries through the barrel time.
