About this bottle
Maker's Mark Private Selection starts with fully matured Maker's Mark, then sends the barrel back into the distillery's limestone cellar with ten additional oak staves picked by whoever is selecting it. Roughly nine weeks later the whisky comes out darker and more layered than the standard bottling, at 110.6 proof. Red winter wheat stands in for rye in the mash, so there is no pepper fighting the wood: caramel, baked apple and vanilla bean on the nose, toffee, toasted nut and warm baking spice on the palate, and a long finish of dry oak and dark sugar. Big enough for a splash of water, and it makes a serious old fashioned.
