About this bottle

Michter's US*1 American Whiskey is an unblended American whiskey, distinct from Michter's bourbon and rye in that it doesn't meet the aging requirements to carry a 'straight' designation, giving the distillery more flexibility in the final blend. It's aged in Michter's own toasted-and-charred barrels and bottled at 83.4 proof, non-chill filtered. Expect a smooth, mellow palate of caramel, vanilla, and light oak spice, without the sharper edges of a younger straight whiskey. It's built as an easy, versatile whiskey — approachable enough for someone new to American whiskey, and mixable enough for a bartender's well. Michter's built its reputation on small-batch consistency, and this bottle reflects that house style.

How to drink Michter's US*1 American Whiskey

It's built for versatility — a solid whiskey sour or old fashioned base, and smooth enough to sip neat or on the rocks without demanding much attention. A good everyday bottle rather than an occasion pour.

The Bourbon Historian
@bourbonhistorian
A resurrection rather than a survival. The Pennsylvania distillery that carried the Michter's name — Bomberger's, in Schaefferstown — went bankrupt and fell silent in 1989. The name was revived and rebuilt in Kentucky in the 1990s. Worth having on the shelf as a reminder that not every historic distillery made it through, and the ones that came back did it deliberately.
Their tasting notes Nose: butterscotch, vanilla bean, light citrus. Palate: soft, sweet, easy oak. Finish: medium, gentle.

Questions about this bottle

What's the best way to serve US*1 American Whiskey?

Serve it neat or on the rocks in a rocks glass; it's aged in toasted-and-charred barrels, which give it a rounder profile than most bourbons.

What cocktails work well with US*1 American Whiskey?

It works well in an Old Fashioned, a Manhattan, or a Whiskey Sour, where its sweetness and oak balance the other ingredients.

What's distinctive about the barrels Michter's uses?

They're toasted before charring, an extra step that adds a layer of caramelized wood sugar.
