Mocel Mezcal Artesanal Cupreata is an unaged mezcal made from agave cupreata, the squat wild-growing species that thrives in the hills of Guerrero and takes years longer to mature than cultivated espadin. Artesanal is a legal category, not a slogan: the agave is roasted in an earthen pit, milled and fermented in wood, then distilled in small stills, and each yearly expression reflects that harvest. This 2022 release opens with wood smoke, wet stone and green herbs. The palate is roasted agave, citrus pith and black pepper, and the finish is dry and mineral. Sip it neat from a copita, with orange and sal de gusano alongside.
