About this bottle

Penelope Magic Toast is a four-grain straight bourbon finished with a proprietary blend of toasted, rather than charred, oak staves, then bottled at barrel strength with nothing diluted down. Toasting instead of charring the finishing wood pulls out extra vanilla, baking spice, and dark caramel without the bitterness a hard char can add. The nose carries toasted oak, vanilla, caramel, and brown sugar with warm baking spice; the palate is rich and full — dark caramel, vanilla, toasted oak, cinnamon, and nutmeg; the finish runs long and warming with lingering toasted oak and spice. This is a bigger, more intense version of Penelope's usual smooth, approachable four-grain style. Pour it neat first, then add water in small increments.

How to drink Penelope Magic Toast

Start it neat — barrel strength whiskey with a toasted-stave finish carries real heat, so give it a few minutes before deciding whether it needs water. It's rich enough to anchor an Old Fashioned if you'd rather mix it.

What the verse says

Good to know

Questions about this bottle

What does "toasted" versus "charred" barrel finishing mean?

Toasting the oak staves rather than charring them draws out vanilla, caramel, and baking spice without the bitterness a hard char can add, giving this bourbon a rounder, sweeter finish.

What cocktails work well with this bourbon?

Its rich caramel and spice make it a solid Old Fashioned base, though it's worth trying neat first given the barrel-strength proof.
