Rod & Hammer's Tasters Club Bourbon Syrah Barrel 750ml

This Tasters Club release from Rod & Hammer's is a bourbon finished in Syrah wine barrels, a natural move for a central coast distillery with vineyards next door, and one that pulls the whiskey toward dark fruit rather than more oak. The bourbon goes in with the usual caramel-and-vanilla frame; the Syrah casks add blackberry, plum and a dry tannic grip on the way out. The nose is red fruit, vanilla and cedar; the palate runs caramel, dark berry, black pepper and cocoa; the finish is dry and lightly tannic. Drink it neat, or stir an old fashioned and skip the orange peel entirely.
