About this bottle

Grown on a Demeter-certified biodynamic estate in the hills of Rutherford, Quintessa is a proprietary Napa Valley red blend and the wine that put this single vineyard on the map. The 2019 vintage draws on all five Bordeaux grapes — Cabernet Sauvignon leads, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Carmenere filling out the frame. It pours dense and dark: cassis and blackberry, a thread of licorice, dried flowers and the mineral, earthy edge Rutherford is known for. Fine-grained tannins and bright acidity keep it lifted through a long finish. Powerful now but built to cellar — decant it for a steak dinner tonight, or lay it down for a decade.

How to drink Quintessa 2019

If drinking young, decant for at least an hour to soften the tannins — a wide-bottomed decanter helps more than a narrow one here. Serve at cellar temperature, around 62-65°F, rather than fully room temperature, and pour into a large-bowled Bordeaux glass.
