The National Distillery Company New Zealand Navy Strength Gin is bottled at the higher strength the Royal Navy once demanded so spilled spirit would not ruin gunpowder. Strength does more than raise the burn: it carries oils that would otherwise be lost, so the botanicals arrive louder and hold their shape in a cold, diluted drink. The nose is pine, juniper and bright citrus oil; the palate is concentrated, with juniper, pepper, lemon peel and green herbs; the finish is long, dry and warming. This is a cocktail gin above all. Put it in a Negroni or a Gimlet where a standard gin would vanish under the other ingredients.
