Joseph Phelps Insignia Napa Valley 2019 is the winery's flagship Bordeaux-style blend, made from 93% Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Petit Verdot and Malbec sourced from Joseph Phelps' Napa Valley estate vineyards. Insignia has been produced every vintage since 1974, among the first proprietary Bordeaux blends made in California. The 2019 opens with cassis, red fruit, and leafy tobacco, moving into blackberry, dark currant, and dark chocolate on the palate, backed by fine-grained tannins and a long finish. At 14.5% ABV, it's a full-bodied, age-worthy Cabernet blend for someone buying a serious Napa red for a cellar or a special occasion rather than a weeknight pour.
How to drink Joseph Phelps Insignia 2019
Decant it for at least an hour before serving — the tannin structure needs air to soften. Pour into a large-bowled glass around 60–65°F, and pair it with a well-marbled steak or another dish rich enough to stand up to it.
