Navy Grog
Donn Beach, Don the Beachcomber, 1940s
The Navy Grog is three rums shaken with lime, white grapefruit, honey and a splash of soda, served over crushed ice. Honey rounds out the rum, and the grapefruit gives it a bitter, bracing edge. A tiki drink for the cold weeks of December, named for the Navy's rum ration.

Donn Beach created the Navy Grog at Don the Beachcomber, where it was a favorite through the 1940s and 1950s tiki boom. Trader Vic later made his own version with allspice dram. The name nods to grog, the watered rum ration the British Royal Navy gave its sailors.

Batching dilution
When you batch, there's no ice melting in a shaker, so you add the water yourself: 18% for spirit-forward drinks, 25% for shaken ones.
